What is a database?
A database is a collection of data which reflects a real world situation. Often times there is a problem involved which the database is designed to solve. Examples of some problems are:
1. We need to register our students, track what classes they have taken, see classes available, and show what they have paid. The following image shows a database designed by Little Green Apples which accomplishes all of this on this one screen of a more extensive database.

2. How does my company keep track of the sales we have made to clients?
3. My museum has very valuable paintings on display that we need to track the details of paintings in our collection. When a painting is loaned out we need to track information related to the loan.
4. Every quarter we do a newsletter. I want to have them emailed out to our members. In addition, I want to track information about our members and know when their renewal is due.
These are some examples of what a database can accomplish.

Do I need a Database and How much will it cost?
The financial outlay for a custom designed database is something that can easily run the in thousands of dollars. Before you consider having it designed, you need to look at how you run your business.
If you pay to have a database designed and never use it then it is too expensive.
If no one is available enter the data that the database feeds on or enters data incorrectly, then it is too expensive.
The cost of a database is directly related to several factors:
- Will it help you respond to your customers faster and more accurately?
- Will you save time which can be devoted to increasing and maintaining your business?
- Will it help you track important assets that are part of your business?
- Will reports on various aspects of your
business help you?
The Rate of Return on Investment (ROI) of a database. How long does it take for your company to recoup their investment? Surprisingly a very short time.
That is because you are saving the time that employees spend working on daily business, projects etc. This translates to financial savings in running your business.
We like to demonstrate this to potential clients when we talk to them.
